I The Only Friend

I The Only Friend

Branch bending weighted with strange fruit
You dashing, pinstriped suit
Double breasted buttons loose
Dangling there within the noose
Jerk, tremble, heart beats end
I the only watching friend
Hostile people point and leer
Your life forfeit out of fear
Swore your innocence time and again
The jury said guilty, with a grin
A crime of passion they swore
Found you crying by the door
The body cold, blood everywhere
You said you found her lying there
Cops blamed you, no one else around
You had just arrived from out of town
They dragged you in though you didn’t fight
Beat you under a bright light
Broke you fingers one by one
Trying to find where you hid the gun
Beat your body black and blue
All the time swearing it was you
Her blood and yours there on your hands
They beat you badly you barely could stand
You swore that you loved her and could never do this
The blood on your hands was from your one last kiss
You said you embraced her lifeless form tight
And had God himself been in front of you there would have been a fight
You said you released her and crawled to the door
And that’s where they found you huddled up on the floor
Insanely you begged for release from these earthly bounds
Begged let me join her in heavenly gowns
Then they accused you of taking her life
And that was the start of this horrible strife
Dragged off to the jail beaten to a pulp
So parched and thirsty you couldn't even gulp
Days and weeks knowing evil is out there and no one will seek
Falsely accused of a crime and the outlook is bleak
Months and years knowing the trail has gone cold as old bone
The trial, the lawyers, the money all gone,
and you thinking you're all alone,
but I'm here; I'm watching your final hour
They would have known the truth too,
had they looked in your shower,

I was there watching each one of you
